Match Reports

Sat 29 Aug 2015 - U9 Spiders v Gungahlin

The Yass under 9 Spiders played against Gungahlin at Walker Park this weekend.

On a windy, but sunny day the two teams faced off for the second time this season. The Spiders started quite strongly helped by some great goal keeping by Johnathan Hamish put in a very good effort and did some excellent clearing kicks , he has really found his boot towards the end of the season. D’Artagnan had another good game and was contesting and winning many challenges. Benjamin (Captain) was very involved in the first half attacks and put in a brave effort in goal for the second half. Caleb was everywhere today and enjoyed being Centre back for the whole game. Hugh put in a really brave effort although he was unwell he supported his team as best he could and still managed a couple of close shots at Goal. Floyd (Player of the Match) put in a tremendous effort today. He was full of encouragement for his team mates right up to the final whistle

Sat 22 Aug 2015 - Belwest Lions v U9 Spiders

The Yass under 9 Spiders played against The Belwest Lions at Latham this weekend.

On a warm sunny day the two teams faced off and it was an enjoyable and very even match for the first half.  Belwest gained the upper hand in the second half but the Spiders put in a good account of themselves. The Spiders generally kept to their positions, which made it quite a fast paced game. The Spiders pushed hard into Belwest Territory on numerous occasions but were unable to turn this into points. A great solo effort by Hugh gave the Spiders some renewed hope. Hamish (Captain) and also player of the match had an outstanding game he defended very well in the first half with some great clearing kicks up the left wing. He also put in a great effort in goal during the second half. Floyd played very well today and so nearly came away with a goal, both he and Chase teamed up on a number of attacks supporting and passing to each other. Caleb and Jack were both excellent in defence, and D’Artagnan is probably the most improved player on the field for the season! This was evident in his strong performance today. Johnathan made his prescence felt during the second half and made some good runs up the field. Johnathans ball skills are right up with the best players on the team. Benjamin put in another good performance and as always, was thinking and trying his hardest.

Sat 15 Aug 2015 - U9 Spiders v Gungahlin Force

The Yass under 9 Spiders played against Gungahlin at Walker Park this weekend.

On a slightly overcast a strong Gungahlin side had possession for almost the entire first half in the Spiders territory. There was an improvement in the second half with some great goal kicks from Hamish (player of the match) setting up some good attacks. Jack also had a great day and had good concentration and some excellent passes when he was on the wing. Benjamin after a long absence was appreciated by his team mates and made his presence felt on the field. Floyd tried very hard in goal during the first half and was both lucky and unlucky at times. Johnathan had a good game with some good breaks and field position but unfortunately had little support when he had the ball. Chase ended the second half well and enjoyed playing with his friend Patrick who helped us out today as we were short on players. Caleb showed off his great one on one skills again today beating players time and again.

Sat 8 Aug 2015 - Gungahlin v U9 Spiders

The Yass under 9 Spiders played against Gungahlin at Harrison this weekend.

On a beautiful sunny day both teams played extremely well and bit was a very close match. Gungahlin had the upper hand in the first half but the Spiders fought back well in the second. The Spiders possession was excellent through both halfs and the level of teamwork was the best we have seen all season. On numerous occasions the Spiders found space and passed to team mates in good scoring position. Floyd did a great pass to Chase enabling him to score a good solid goal. Hugh had a great solo run which also resulted in a goal. It was pleasing to see that although Hugh didn’t need help with that goal that he had two team mates up supporting him. D’Artagnan put in a great effort in both halfs. Johnathan had an excellent stint in goal during the second half and Caleb showed some great ball skills in a number of one on one situations. Jack had a good game with some good tackling and listening to the goalie about positions during corner kicks.

Sat 1 Aug 2015 - Belsouth Currawongs v U9 Spiders

The Yass under 9 Spiders played against the Belsouth Currawongs at Hawker this weekend. It was a pretty good overall performance by the Spiders today. The game felt very close throughout although the Currawongs had possession for much more of the game than the Spiders. Johnathan (Captain) had some good breaks towards goal and was unlucky not to score today. Likewise Caleb can be very proud of his efforts and so nearly came away with a goal. Jack was tackling well and had some good touches when he was on the wing. Hugh had a good stint in goal against some very good shots by the opposition, and looked fired up during the second half. Hamish made some good ground up the Left wing when he ran the ball himself and D’Artagnan was very diligent in Defence. Chase (player of the match) had a great game and had a couple of  shots at goal, he kept trying hard for the whole game and was a popular choice with his team mates for Player of the match. Floyd had a great game and scored a cracking goal.

Sat 25 Jul 2015 - U9 Spiders v Radford

The Yass under 9 Spiders played against Radford at Walker Park this weekend.

On a very soggy pitch the Spiders had their first game in over a month. Once again we were playing positions. The team now all know the different positions on the field and there were very few holes left in the defence for Radford. The Radford team put some good pressure on us through most of the first half and came up with the first goal. The Spiders only major weakness in the first half was not getting up in support of the strikers so our possession in the Radford half was generally short lived. During the second half Hugh made his presence felt with a very quick goal scored from the kick off. The Spiders had to fight hard for a while after this as Radford rallied and were determined to take back the lead. The Spiders pushed on and everyone played their hardest. Jack had a great game and was contesting the ball at every opportunity, Caleb and D’Artagnan showed their versatility in Defence and mid field, Hamish had a great stint in Goal in the second half with no Goals scored against him! Floyd and Johnathan had a few shots at Goal in both halfs but were unlucky not to get on the score board. Benjamin was everywhere and has the best clearing kicks on the team always protecting the Goal and thinking about where his team needs him most.

Sat 27 Jun 2015 - Gungahlin Strikers v U9 Spiders

The Yass Under 9 Spiders played the Gungahlin Strikers at Harrison Playing Fields this weekend. It was a very foggy Canberra morning and the Spiders first game playing assigned positions. All the players adapted extremely well and although we only worked on positions for the first time on Monday everyone knew what was expected of them. The Spiders defended well throughout the game but were finding it hard to move the ball up the field. This led to more shots at Goal by the opposition with a few finding their mark. On the positive side the Spiders generally kept to their areas of responsibility and were less bunched up than in previous games. Both the Ed’s were very impressed with all the Spiders Performances.  Particularly Hamish (Captain), Caleb and Chase all working very hard for the whole game. Hugh did well in Goal during the first half with some excellent saves. Jack was doing well in defence during the first half and tried hard on the wing during the second half. D’Artagnan was very involved today and made a couple of valuable clearing kicks protecting the Goal. Floyd started at Centre Forward in the first half and put in a good effort in Goal during the second half. Benjamin was a strong defender and his clearing kicks are very accurate and powerful which will be useful as we get used to positional play more. Johnathan helped out the Redback U9’s today as they were down on numbers and I am sure that was greatly appreciated by their team.

Sat 20 Jun 2015 - U9 Spiders v Belwest Lions

The Yass Under 9 Spiders played the Belwest Lions at Walker Park this weekend. After a very wet week it was nice to have some sunshine for our game. Saturdays game started off slowly for the Spiders with most of the possession going to the opposition and the majority of  the play in the Spiders half. The Spiders were trying very hard throughout the game. I believe every player put in a huge effort although the Lions set pieces and passes from the wings to the centre kept the pressure squarely on the Spiders throughout the match. Hugh Ben and Hamish were the standout players for the Spiders during the first half. Floyd and Johnathan looked dangerous at times but didn’t get many chances up front as the pressure from the Belwest attack kept the Spiders on the back foot for most of the game. It took a superb shot by Hugh in the second half to really get the Spiders going. D’Artagnan was heavily involved with the play as was Chase (Captain) and Jack as always rarely missed a tackle

Sat 13 Jun 2015 - Gungahlin Force v U9 Spiders

The Yass Under 9 Spiders played the Gungahlin Force at Harrison Playing Fields this weekend.

The Gungahlin side were very strong and play was mostly in the Spiders half during the first half of the game. The Spiders were quite resilient in defence and Benjamin and D’Artagnan in particular were trying very hard. Hugh had an outstanding stint in Goal, with one particularly memorable save tipping the ball over the cross bar, a save  that any Premier League Goal Keeper would be proud of. Caleb (Captain) did very well with some excellent passes to his team mates. Jack was good in defence and is one of the best tacklers on the team. D’Artagnan is really starting to play with more confidence and is going from strength to strength. Hamish put in a big effort and was responsible for some of the better passes and clearing kicks on Saturday. Floyd had a good game both he and Johnathan putting themselves in good field position for passes to the centre. Johnathan received a great pass to the centre from Hugh via D’Artagnan, from which he was able to take a cracking shot at goal, a great display of teamwork. Chase was outstanding as the goalkeeper during the second half, and was always involved with the play during the first half.

Sat 23 May 2015 - Belsouth Currawongs v U9 Spiders

The Yass Under 9 Spiders played the Belsouth Currawongs at Hawker this weekend.

The Currawongs looked really dangerous for the first half but some excellent defence and brilliant goalkeeping by Hugh kept them at bay. The Spiders kept at it and in the second half were rewarded for their persistence. Floyd (Captain) had a great game and found space a few times for breaks up the field plus some well placed clearing kicks showed he was thinking all the time, Likewise Ben was inspiring in defence and made good decisions under pressure. Jack (player of the match) was always up with the play and put in a huge effort. Hugh was instrumental both in Goal and in offence this was probably his best game of the season so far with two breaks up the field. Johnathan was placing himself in space hoping to receive the ball from his team mates which will certainly pay off in time. Chase did a great job in Goal and was always up with the play in the first half. D’Artagnan had another good game and seems to really enjoy taking corners which he is getting quite good at, looking for the players that are unmarked to kick to. Caleb had another productive game and showed his speed and determination today. Hamish had some good touches on the ball today and was never far from the action.

Sat 16 May 2015 - U9 Spiders v Radford

The Yass Under 9 Spiders played Radford at Walker Park this weekend. It was a fast paced and close match. The Spiders really dug deep and were rewarded with an excellent result. It was hard to pick man of the match Johnathan Alley as all the players put in 110% effort. With no subs on the day everyone had to work that little bit harder to hold off a determined Radford. Jack Davis (Captain) gave some good instructions to his team at kick off and was always involved in the plays. Floyd and Hugh had some good breaks into space and Benjamin was always looking out for the unmarked players. D’Artagnan was doing well with his throw ins this week and also took a corner. Caleb defended well and made taking the ball off attacking players look easy. The Spiders put in a great effort and it was an enjoyable if nail biting match for the spectators.
