Match Reports

Sat 29 Jun 2013 - Yass Under 14's v Canberra Grammar Sky

The proudly sponsored Yass Soldiers Club Redbacks had a great game on the weekend when they took on the under-maned Canberra Grammar Sky for a 7-0 win.

The first half saw Grammar lead with some strong attacks; however the great goalie skills of Callum Dodd and our defence line did well to cancel any chances they had. Grammar soon tired with Ryan Young and Flynn Buffington scoring a few goals before halftime.

The second half saw Yass pick up their game, with many more shots on goal. Ryan, Dominik Turner and Jacques Kapetanakos had successful goals. These scoring opportunities wouldn’t have come if it wasn’t for the brilliant work of the midfield. The junior Redbacks now get a 3 week “holiday” before playing away against Woden Valley.

Sat 15 Jun 2013 - Marist v Yass Under 14's

The Yass Soldiers Club sponsored U14 Redbacks marched on to battle Marist for a 10-1 win at Kambah on the weekend. The first half saw the Redbacks combat confusion as the poorly structured Marist side grouped around the ball, causing possession to last seconds and keeping our defenders on their toes. On occasions where Yass cleared the ball from the legions of Marist opposition, our strike force of forwards were readily awaiting to assault their target. Half time: 5-nil.

The second half saw some new strategic manoeuvres from the opposition as they tried to regain some lost ground. This ended with a goal after a scramble in Yass’ goalie box. Full time saw Dominik and Ryan sharing 4 goals; whilst Flynn and Bayley scored one each and many near misses.

The biggest battle is to come at 1:45pm this weekend, as we unleash the fury on Gungahlin who are currently on top of the ladder only by goal amount. So come and watch this much anticipated game and support your local Redbacks.

Sat 8 Jun 2013 - Yass Under 14's v Brindabella

Yass started off strong, a near miss by Victoria Alley early in the first half gave Yass the confidence to push the ball towards their goal a number of times only to be stolen back. Mid-way through the first half Dominik Turner found the back of the net, putting Yass one goal up. Strong defence from Jacques Kapetanakos, Shaun Button and Quinn Ryder saved a number of breaks from Brindabella. Returning the ball back down the field allowing Dominick the opportunity to score his second goal. Callum Dodd as goalie, had his magnet gloves on and saved some strong shots from Brindabella. Joanna Devey and Annabelle Hansson played a strong game for Yass. Elliot Southwell gave his goalie gloves a rest this week and showed that his strong kicks towards the goal can be hard to trap. Yass 2-0 at half time.

The second half Yass played a great passing game and managed to get around the Brindabella defenders, a pass to Ryan Young from their goalie gave him the chance to lob a shot over his head to score. Thomas Stains and Bayley Maher had a great game in the second half with their running and passing. Flynn Buffington, Jay Ryder and Brendan Bolton also played a great game for Yass.

Another outstanding team effort by Yass Redbacks to come away with another win. Final score 3-0.

Sat 1 Jun 2013 - Belsouth v Yass Under 14's

The Yass Soldiers Club sponsored U14 Redbacks rose to the challenging weather conditions to pocket yet another win on the weekend.

Before Yass had a chance to get the rain out of their eyes, Belsouth gained a quick goal from a messy cross during the early minutes of the match. This knocked the Redbacks in to gear, with the retaliation only lasting seconds before Ryan Young found his opportunity to find the back of the net. Our goal scoring machine, Ryan, soon multiplied our score to 4-1 by half time. The ball and field by this staged had slowed greatly, with a lot of Yass’ passes falling short of there target and and airboure kicks hardly making it to shoulder height.

The second half saw the forwards spread out, with an exceptional job by Flynn Buffington, who drew half the defensive line to the opposite side of field. Flynn did end up slotting one away after Belsouth’s defense saw what he was doing, leaving him in great position. Bayley Maher was our other goal scorer who did some exceptional plays ending in 2 goals and many close shaves. Jacques Kapetanakos and Shaun Button played their defensive roles to the tee and also our girl power combo of Annabelle Hansson and Victoria Alley on the right wing worked wonders around Belsouth’s midfield and defense.

Final score: 8-1.

The U14s are hosting Brindabella at home this weekend, so come and cheer them to victory!

Sat 18 May 2013 - Tuggeranong v Yass Under 14's

The Soldiers Club sponsored U14 Redbacks thrashed Tuggeranong on the weekend with a 14 nil win.

Within minutes of the starting whistle, the ball was played to Ryan Young who easily shot one into the corner of the net. This gave the team a hunger for victory, with Ryan, Flynn Buffington and Victoria Alley finding the back of the net for a 6-0 halftime score.

The second half saw a shuffle with some of the backs moving up to attacking roles.

Shaun Button and Jacques Kapetanakos had many attempts on goal however the Tuggeranong keeper found himself in the right spot at the right time.

Jacques did find the opportunity to seal his first goal for the season.

A great goal came from Tom Staines when he took a corner kick that curved into the back of the net.

Bayley Maher had some great runs down the sideline, setting up many of the goals scored. He even bagged one himself!

Our current top goal scorer, Ryan, went home with six goals and birthday boy Flynn achieved a hat trick!

This is the third win in a row for the undefeated Redbacks who play Canberra Grammar Navy at home next weekend in what should be a much tighter match.

Sat 11 May 2013 - Yass Under 14's v Monaro

The Soldiers Club sponsored U14 Redbacks had a decisive 2-0 win over Monaro on the weekend.

As this was Mother’s Day, a big thank you goes to Andrew Southwell, who kindly donated $20 per goal to Breast Cancer Research.

Dominik Turner was the first goal scorer for the day with a nice shot into the corner of the net during the first half.

Callum Dodd did a great job in goals while Elliot Southwell enjoyed the centre mid before returning to goalie for the second half.

A sweaty second half saw great ball skills from Tom Staines as he and Dom battled the centre mid with ease.

Bayley Maher had a great game on the wing, having some close shaves on goal.

Ryan Young and Victoria Alley did well up front, with Ryan scoring off a rebound from a Monaro defender.

The whole team played a high level of soccer with an honourable mention going to Annabelle Hansson who played an excellent game in an unfamiliar position.

Sat 4 May 2013 - Belnorth v Yass Under 14's

Under 14’s Redbacks kicked off the first round of the season against Belnorth at Kaleen this weekend, under the guidance of their new coach Brett Foran.

Victoria scored the first goal of the day from a perfectly placed kick over the goalies head to find the back of the net.

Belnorth tried hard to get the ball through the Redbacks back line to their goal but were stopped by excellent defence of Shaun, Jacques and Callum.

Dominik had a brilliant game scoring the first hat trick for the season.

Elliot’s goalkeeping was on target all day even though the wind caused a few problems with his kick outs.

Ryan scored the third goal of the day, but was unable to take advantage of a penalty kick in the second half.

Bayley scored his first goal, off some great team work from the centres.

Overall Yass Redbacks had a fantastic first game for the season and their coach Brett Foran was very happy with the way each player showed enthusiasm and commitment on the day. The final score Redbacks 6 Belnorth 0.
